The free ride is over.
Saved me 6hrs I might have wasted this week on moving some services here.
Relevant bits from the email:
Please note that, from 1 August 2020, the prices for all active Cloud VPS – Server Smart services (details available on web page), including those already activated at lower prices and renewed until now at those prices – excluding those subject to recent promotions – will be updated.
From the first renewal after 1 August 2020, the following prices will be applied. All Cloud VPS – Server Smart products activated before 15 November 2018 will be brought into line with the new pricing.
Cloud VPS – Server Smart Small: €2.79 + VAT

Oof, now I'm not as upset that I cancelled my few 1 EUR VMs right before they did away with that lineup.
@Falzo, you still idling a handful of these?

Shucks, I still have a decent chunk of pre-paid credit... one of the most prem €1 providers RIP
It was good while it lasted. But I'm not going to renew it at the new price.
I wonder if any provider is going to make a refugee offer?
when you consider the payment gateway fee's for that they probably only need to retain around 25% at the new price to be no worse off with more resources available for those that stay.

True, but most likely everyone cancelling are idlers using minimal, if any, resources. While the ones that stay at the higher price were probably actually using their servers for something. Pure speculation, though.

I was just using it as a vpn+pihole(listening on port 53 only on tun0,wg0) .
It used to present a very stable 150ms ping, but it has been stuck at 250ms (via SGP) routing for a few days. No idea if it's related.
I've already switched over router to alternates in NL. I love cheap VMs.
yep could well be, maybe the outcome they are hoping for is somewhere in the middle, or maybe they never cared and it was a way to front-load costs to grab IP space.

My 1 euro box hosted in DE1 :-(
Just found the mail in my inbox and come here to check for the news.
Well, I have to admit I am feeling a bit sad about this change...even though it was supposed to happen at some point.
I have this VPS now for almost 4 years and it's one of my "main VPS" running quite a few things - it never failed once during this whole time. Server and network were always stable, I have to admit: for the given price (1€ + 19% VAT), it was one of the best offers I ever managed to get!
That said, I might hold onto it for a bit longer, but I am afraid to say, that for the new pricing it may loose the game to other premium providers with the given resources.
Killed off the 2 idlers. No remorse.
This is the game.
I'll kill off the final vpn bastion host once I've made sure I don't lock myself out of any service whitelists ( just a single IP configured).
I've used my Aruba VPS as a Unifi Controller. For €1 it has been working OK, but with the new price hike I'll move everything to Hetzner and get some more RAM and stability instead.
People, €2,79 /month (+ VAT) isn't the end of the world for a VPS with these specs that one actually uses. In fact, it's still a very good deal given the reliability of Aruba Cloud. It may be a little pricey for a VPS that one idles, but not for a VPS that one uses.
Anyway, the writing was on the wall because this was effectively a loss leader for Aruba.
"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)
The end is always nigh.
Always be prepared for the end to arrive at your doorstep.

Bye Aruba, I'm out!
Farewell to two idlers in FR and UK, it was good while it lasted. Consolidating to dedis and home lab.
just deleted one out of three VMs I still have there (UK location, hardcore idler since 2015!!).
the other two are in their frankfurt location and kind of production use, so probably just keep them, despite the price raise.
still cheap, rock solid reliable and too much hassle to look for something else in that exact spot, on top lose the IPs etc.
FTFY
This reminded me of cloudatcost lifetime vm saga. Anybody else ?
no | there is absolutely no connection (or similarity) between Aruba and Cloud At Cost, yet you have the freedom to dream whatever conspiracy you feel like dreaming
I do admit
was nothing and ( maybe Crap from time to time ) when compared with
but maybe like
Many People spent a decent chunk of their money buying up their lifetime plans since they were available for an extended period ( They were not cheap at the starting) and out of the blue, they phased it out.
now please enlighten me: where is the comparison between the two, so I may also "remember" CAC and throw mud onto Aruba?
The closest I can find was @hostsailor offer a day before.
