For all of you who don't know that oracle offers 2 VPS with 1GB RAM (yes with IPv4) for free for life.

Also check out their free databases, they are fast as hell (even Amazon is using those, because their own solution is to slow, lol).

  • I have this.
But the panel is confusing for me, compared to Google or azure.
I can't figure out how to open a port.

Haha, that was my problem too.
When I opened one port it was still unavailable (closed), then I just opened all ports and it worked.

Free is good. Looks like no full core access

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

Would be pretty expensive if they offer 2 dedicated epyc cores for free. Right?

    Thx

  • Yep.
They do a phone number validation and 1$ charge Wich get reversed.
Fair enough since you get about 200$ credits to play for a month too.

  • Don't stick anything valuable on these...they close free accounts sporadically

lol.. card charged twice, status shows declined both times. This is not for me. :-)

  • Your account will be cancelled if you don't login to the panels every xx days; even if you do login, they can still delete your servers for no reason.

You can create a new vm if your old one gets cancelled, but iirc non of my free VMs lasted more than 2 months.

I appreciate their free service, but do make sure that you don't put anything serious with them.

The VM comes with 1/8 CPU. Probably pretty cheap. Their investors are getting nervous, so they're probably doing this to get market share.

But yeah, very appealing. Considering whether to sign up now or later. I don't have a particular use case now (mind you, I have my own servers) for the $300 credit, so that would go to waste after the first month. Probably should wait until I have a real use case for that credit.

I remember reading about that on LET a while back. I registered for this service back in February, and have a server that's been running with them since then. I sign into their panel about once every 2 weeks, and so far nothing has been mysteriously delete or cancelled from my experiences.

  • I signed into their panel after 4mos.
The Mumbai instance I'd spun up in launch week is still up.

Guess I need to investigate putting this to some dumb use.

I had to check my wallet on the new validity card. It's a Visa (Platinum : no idea what that signifies)

    Woops.
I've been idling much longer than I thought.

Do not be surprised to see 60-75 range Cpu-Steal% when running apt dist-upgrade.
This is strictly a sandbox vm.

I just "swapoff -a". Do sync and drop caches because if you've used more swap than you have available ram, that command will not work.

  • As someone else said, don't put anything valuable on them.

They're basically doing the free thing because they rapidly needed to build infrastructure and customers. At the same time, the employees must be figuring it out as they make facepalm mistakes.

I signed up last year and lost three servers so far due to their incompetence. One of those times, they fucked something up on their end and sent out an email saying they fixed it and server should be operational, but it wasn't.

One time, they accidentally emailed out what was supposed to be an internal memo telling the team they're running out of storage and need ideas ASAP to recover space. It's a clown show.

I'm holding on, hopefully they'll get their act together.

With 50MB/s disk and network limits, and almost always overloaded (I've never seen top show loads of 78.0 before) there's lots of better servers to get for data/services you care about.

Anyone managed to get @Nyr 's wireguard install script working ?

    • Ubuntu 20.04 minimal
    • allow all in their firewall dashboard
    • ssh and wipe iptables on the VM
    • install UFW and allow 51820
    • run the wireguard script
    • scan qrcode with android client and activate

    https://github.com/Nyr/wireguard-install
    https://serverfault.com/a/200658 //iptables wipe

EDIT: It's working. Had only TCP open in the dashboard.
