Maria was a super big hit 21 years ago:

"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)

Yes, as long as you don't use it for illegal stuff like torrenting

but these tiny NAT servers that literally cost less than a bag of Doritos come with no SLA, if I need to reboot them etc, I do, you don't get notice etc.

     15:23:56 up 151 days, 17:09, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
     15:23:57 up 158 days, 18:21, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
     15:24:04 up 54 days, 1:17, 0 users, load average: 0.26, 0.24, 0.23

I'm quite sure the nodes' uptimes are higher, but I need to run updates from time to time ;)

    To where? from where?

they are all on shared gbit links on good networks, NL has 100mbit restrictions per container to prevent abuse as its a hotspot for people trying to torrent etc, keep in mind with tiny ram buffers and the nature of OpenVZ it will be slower but within reason, you should very easily achieve that, obviously from Phoenix to PR Congo it may be an issue but if common sense is applied to the destination it should be fine.

Just to nitpick, I've never managed to get > 100 Mbps on the Netherlands NAT instance and I always assumed it was (intentionally) throttled to 100 Mbit.

It's never bothered me apart from me not being able to beat the other 2 NAT VMs on benchmarks

How much download and upload speed do you usually have on your netherland vps ?

  • Got one

Whenever I've needed it, it's been consistent 100Mbit and no issues whatsoever.

It's a very dependable little box for simple little network checks, mtr's, traceroute's and the likes.

  • Can nice LESbians request for special treatment and unthrottling?

P.S: I heard from some spirits that there's something rotten in NL and that the clouds are going to whisk it away? I assume that means more good stuff is on the cards?

Nope, but the limit will be removed globally fairly soon anyway as a result of the second part of your question :)

Working with i3d has become increasingly difficult when it works its great, but that should be standard, the problem is when you have a problem, you have a problem They have past their sell by date long ago for me, there was just no viable alternative, now Clouvider is in Amsterdam, it was only a matter of time.

Kind of a good thing as Inception Hosting actually started as Netherlands only servers, the entire company grew off the back of Netherlands services, then SnelServer (/me spits) took a nosedive, I moved to i3d, it started well then suddenly all of the senior staff just vanished overnight and the place became a joke, I was then pushed to expand the UK and Phoenix markets which were minor at the time for me to the primary base.

Excluding the NAT servers, I don't think I have sold a single NL service in 3 years, that's how little investment I have in i3d now :), at one point I was dropping around 5k /month there for servers, now it is not even 500, I have just let the location shrink as people leave.

I am however very excited about getting started up again in the Netherlands, I have build a great relationship with Dominik @Clouvider over the last 6 - 7 years, 2021 should be an interesting year!

  • One more question please how many customers are on the NAT nodes ? Like 100 or thausend :D

  • @AnthonySmith said: Inception Hosting actually started as Netherlands only servers

That sounds like a wonderful opening line to a long adventure on the hosting industry. I think we have a writer!

Attention @lentro and @vyas - you have competition for resident content creation and story telling (of the non-fictional kind).

Plus he also happens to provide a fertile forum for idle-ascetics of a certain kind. And he runs a business on the side. And he's also a horse (and server) whisperer. I think there are stories here that need to see the light of the day or shall I say byte of the forum.

    Can I be honest?

I think if you have this many concerns over a €1.66 p/ year VPS, beyond, can I connect to it and does it have internet access (which is implied by the fact it exists) this is not the right service for you, I think you should consider buying a regular VPS with its own IP.

I don't want your own expectations to exceed reality.

It varies, usually no more than 500, no less than 200.

I am greatly impressed by your vocabulary and writing skills! Notions like "idle-ascetics of a certain kind." The "server whisperer." "Byte of the forum." My mind reels!

How could we mere Content Writers Group members rise to your expectations? I was going to say, "You should join us." But neigh! Nay! You should lead us! Under your leadership, our fight against the Macedonians to bring to inception Inception's autobiography inevitably will succeed!
