i have been using excel for years .. but now grouping vps becomes harder when 1 vps can be for ( storage, iscsi , s3 ) and in another app group it has docker with ( privoxy, promethus ) so on... billing info i can live with excel but when it comes to application/usage booking it becomes hard.

Prometheus + Grafana? You can create some nice graphs :)

Edit: didn't realize you meant planning for text, not tracking usage. Notion or something would be the best I think for your use case

  • I use a folder of text files.

Each server has a text file that describes what services are deployed on them and the steps to deploy them. This allows me to easily re-deploy a service on the same or a different server.
Then, there are some configuration files, and some other text files that contain common services deployed on more than one box.

This covers not only VPS and websites, but also gadgets in my closest (home router, sensor gateway, etc).

I started building something like that last year but the project is stuck there because of the lack of time :(

Maybe I should stop building those VirMach tracker which VirMach don't really appreciate, organising events / megathreads where still a lot people are not satisfied, or creating some snow effects that people complain about it being super laggy, and focus on my real projects...

Let me set it as a goal, hope I can make it happen in 2021, let's see. But the first step is I have to upgrade my only working device / laptop into SSD because it is getting insanely slow.

I don't know if Virmach appreciated it but I certainly did so for that I thank you.

Would you mind sharing some concept diagrams or similar?

Yes its tedious. But I feel excel can work wonders. I really feel your pain, by not making excel as an rdbms type thing.

Don't really want to share more details, but I notice it might cause competition to HetrixTools too (which I don't hope so), so I am still judging between what are the scopes that needs to be covered.

you should not store sensitive information on notion, notion dont have 2fa or encryption and their employee just need your consent to access your board or page.

though notion is quite good compare to trello and asana for collaboration work space. just few days back subscribed to their premium plan and it worth every penny if you are into task management stuff.

i'm in a same boat as op , i save all the details in my local excel sheet file, following this thread for good suggestion.

You already consent by using their service according to their terms. They have some pretty nasty terms regarding to 3rd parties and ownership. You should really read those before using Notion for any sensitive information indeed.
Most content creators using Notion are sponsored, so it's not really objective.

  • I also want to make one like this, a simple website that can store VPS lists from various providers and write down prices for tracking.
if only a few servers, excel is sufficient, but when the BF promo crazy every year and unused servers grow more and more, this sometimes confuses or even passes.

but it takes a lot more ideas than imagined.

i thought i would make it open source on github with laravel + adminlte

have any ideas? we can collaborate.

maybe features like monitoring + resource usage?

I think it should be kept simple, no need for monitoring or resource usage.
There are many services and even open source software for monitoring and resource usage.

Just throwing this out there. How about LibreNMS? There's a tab that allows you to add notes for each device.

Then you'd have a central hub to track and monitor resources for all your services and you can set up individual process monitors (i.e. web server, ssh server, plex server, etc.) as you add them to make sure all your processes are online and running. Also does alerts if you set it up email/Discord/whatever-you-want alerts. Takes a bit to get used to, but it's all there for the taking.

+1 for simple text files - and an allmighty vim. :)

Little to no dependencies and everyday I learn more about vim, I am surprised how efficient editing text files can be.

Copy&Pasting, folding with custom markers, working with multiple files in split windows, executing commands out of vim, and assigning shortcuts to everything you often use.

Well, of course you can also use emacs, notepad++ or whatever you like. But somehow text files are sexy. :)

I've tried Joplin, but ended up switching to StandardNotes, mostly cause they have a (Official) web app.
It's important for me to be able to access my notes anywhere.
It's hosted, but could also be self-hosted, notes are encrypted and they have web, desktop and mobile apps.
The free plan works just fine, there's also extensions and themes made by the community that you can use for free if you don't want to pay for an extended license.
Backups could be taken either encrypted or decrypted, it could also be automated and scheduled using their CLI.

when life is just as simple as row and column then excel is great ... but when you want to add more filters/grouping things get akward with excel.
