$2/TB OVH Vint Hill
I have a black friday OVH storage server in Vint Hill I'm done using that is expiring next week. If anyone is interested in some cheap storage of $2 per terabyte, let me know. I don't mind keeping it if I can share it with someone to split the cost.
I think I can transfer the server as well. It comes with a /29 block of IPs.

What's the overall cost per month? Specs of the server?
Cheap dedis are my drug, and I'm too far gone to turn back.
it's like $127 per month.

32GB RAM
SoftRAID 6x12TB SATA HDD
500Mbps Public Bandwidth
I would be in for a few TB's if you can get enough people to keep it.
How do you want to provide it? with a VM?

Sounds good. I'm thinking a simple proxmox KVM and you just access it via the proxmox webgui

that makes 4 of us, I'll start setting it up. Let me know how much storage you guys want.

Splitting it by 6 seems to give decent storage to price
Also interested.. I am struggling to think off hand how much storage I'd need though...

Splitting in 12 would also give 2.5GB RAM and 6GB for $10.5 monthly
Gotta keep in mind the outbound bandwidth is only 500Mbps. I think i'll start with the /29 on the server and slice it up 8 ways and see how it does.
I'm going to run it as raid0. this should be low priority cold storage as offsite backup. Doing raid1 is gonna kill the iops in my opinion.
Interested !
Slice it up 6-way and everyone gets their own disk so IOPS wont have noisy neighbors.

this sounds like a great idea, but then I'm limiting the slices to 12tb each which is kinda pricey for some at $24. Would this be an improvement over just a big raid0 array though?
Separately, I'd be very wary of a such a huge raid-0 setup. Any disk dies and the whole array goes kaput. Better to just treat each disk separately and slice it among that particular disks users proportionally. If something bad were to happen, you only loose that one disk and only those users suffer.
Plus as @teamacc has highlighted, the IOPS are going to be pretty poor and susceptible to abuse when it is shared across all disks unevenly.
yah, I came to same conclusion. thanks!
You could also just partition all drives evenly (at 12 users thats 6 partitions of 1tb per user, split along all 6 drives) and the user could run his/her own raid of choice over top. I'd love to see zfs inside a kvm container

I thought the goal was to limit noisy neighbors by allocating one disk per user? wouldn't this allow someone crunching the disk to slow the other VMs down?
Set I/O and iops limits per VM, you can reconfigure the node but you don't need to do it.

Count with me as well for 2$/TB.
Any update yet my guy?
Yes, go grab your slice at vishbox.com
I just threw it all together so there are no doubt some bugs. A lot of the automated stuff don't work so after you place your order I will have to manually update the server until I fix the scripts.
Please be patient with me
I'm gonna apply for a provider tag here too so it's all legit

Half of the slice possible? Or maybe customizing something?
Sure, if there's not a lot of interest in the 12TB drive slices I'll see about reconfiguring it. Right now everyone gets their own 12tb hard drive.
