Hello guys,
I'm trying to configure an environment for in-memory computing where containers run completely in memory and persistent storage volumes are attached only. My workload consists of many small io quieres and lots of computing (model rendering, relation computing and then simulation tests) so my hope is to speed up the build cyclus by this. Since there's no actual data produced (or better say I can be easily reproduced by re-rendering the predefined model) the possibility of data loss on server crash is negligible.
I've got a testing machine with two Epyc 7543 and 512GB RAM. So far my approach was to create a ramdisk (with tmpfs) and create the containers within this directory. This works, I can see the impact on RAM usage with "free -m" when starting the containers but the build cyclus reports a lower io speed than I get when I run this on my Softwareraid-10 NVMe Gen4 (2GBit/s vs 5GBit/s). I was expecting the in-memory containers to be much faster than the NVMe one.
To simplify my setup for testing, I replaced the containerized setup by a Proxmox installation, created again a ramdisk, added this as storage directory to Proxmox and spawned a container with Debian 12 to test. Same result, the ramdisk container isn't as performant as the NVMe one. Ok, no big surprise changing the setup wasn't helpful but I thought from this point on you can help me better because more users are familiar with Proxmox than Rancher.

Did I miss a point why in-memory it can't be faster than on NVMe? Or is there an error in my setup?

Appreciate any thoughts and help on this.

I have a VPS on which I installed docker with Nginx Proxy Manager and wireguard VPN (angristan wireguard-install script, not docker). I also have a home server on which proxmox is installed. Proxmox runs a KVM VPS (192.168.3.3) on which docker is installed with various applications, as well as a Wireguad VPN client (not on docker) with ip 10.66.66.2. Nginx Proxy Manager on cloud VPS (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ip) is configured with a domain name that points to the KVM VPS on the home server and everything work good with docker apps that run on home server kvm vps. But I also want to access the proxmox webui and openWRT (192.168.3.2) router WEBUI (192.168.3.1).

Few days ago one of my VPS provider reached out to me saying I am using a lot of CPU resources and reduced my CPU limits.

Odd because I haven't touched that VPS for months besides doing regular updates.

So I logged into the VPS and checked the load. Nothing out of the ordinary. 15 minute load average is 0.9 or so. My CPU allocation is 2 cores.

Their control panel does not have info on the history of CPU load so I asked them what triggered their response and outreach. Surely the have some tools monitoring CPU load and found me using an unusual amount of CPU, right?

Instead they were beating around the bush and say if I really want to know, I should install system monitoring tools myself inside the VPS and they are unable to know what's running inside the VPS since this is not a managed service. (BS, not the question I asked) then proceeded to ask me what I am running in the VPS.

After I gave them the services I run (which hardly uses any CPU resources at all) they gave me my 2x CPU allocation back "because I am cooperative".

This whole interaction seems odd to me. They accused me of something and unwilling to show proof. Am I being crazy? Are the providers in their right to ask their clients what they are running in their VPS? There is nothing in their TOS that they can do this. TOS mentioned "fair share" for shared resource usage.

Update:

Greetings! I've become extensively obsessed with port forwarding this week. However, I find myself unable to ascertain a suitable solution that could potentially circumvent the inherent limitation associated with machines connected to Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT). It is my understanding that one could employ a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to facilitate port forwarding or utilize Ngrok. Nevertheless, I am confronted with two specific constraints:

Financial constraint: I am unable to allocate any funds towards bypassing CGNAT.

Comprehensive port forwarding access: I desire unrestricted utilization of port forwarding capabilities, not limited solely to web servers or local hosting.

I kindly request your assistance in providing any potential resolutions to this predicament.

Hello LES members,
Just need some idea to setup a reverse proxy (bouncer proxy) to act as exit node to the web.
I have a few VPS(s) in Europe, USA and used it for personal media server as well as host some personal websites and a owncloud server in NL.
I need to mainly decrease the latency as well as extra hops if possible for my VPS which is running in Europe & USA.
I have a VPS on vultr in New Delhi (which is the closet location from home) and me and some friends nearby this location are accessing it.

Host Server (A) <-------> Vultr VPS - Act as reverse proxy (B) <---- WWW (Internet)

In short I need all the web traffic enter and exit thrue Vultr VPS and it is communicating on internal network to my Host VPS(s)

what is the best way to archive this.. any idea/suggestion welcomed

Security: Basic but not to the point of limiting - Malware, phishing attacks, and other online threats should be handled by the browser. Regular security updates and strong privacy options would also be essential.

Compatibility: The best browser should be compatible with a wide range of operating systems and devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Cross-platform availability allows users to seamlessly switch between different devices while maintaining a consistent browsing experience.

User Interface: The browser should have a clean layout, easy-to-navigate menus, and customizable options to suit preferences.

Tab and Bookmark Management: Provide features like tab grouping, tab search, and the ability to save and organize bookmarks for easy access.

Extensions and Add-ons: Needs to includes a wide variety of extensions and add-ons. These can enhance functionality, provide additional features, and personalize the browsing experience. Support for popular extension frameworks, chrome web store compatibility?

Developer Tools: A comprehensive set of developer tools, the browser should provide robust debugging capabilities, performance analysis tools, and an accessible interface for inspecting and modifying web elements.

Customization Options: Includes options to personalize the user interface, adjust privacy settings, and control various aspects of web content, such as blocking ads or disabling autoplaying videos.

Thanks for taking the time to read all that! Looking forward to hear back from you guys.

So one of my Hosting DA panel got hack.
My 30++ years old "i-got-hacked" cherry has been popped.
It is only sending Spam emails on a few accounts.
All of the password are >20-key generated.

As this is my first, I'm unsure nature of the breach and what i need to do.
I have check a few sites (i.e haveibeenpwn) for breaches, but found none

As a precaution i have:

Suspended the DA user account and server for a day. (i control both user and reseller account)

Change all user password in the domain.

Change SSL (after i unsuspend later)

Notify the provider of the breach

So do i need to do anything else?
How do i know if its a simple password breach or much worse?

EDIT:
changed the title to reflect nature of the breach
Found the offending pc. office user brought their laptop to a 3rd party services during the weekend.
so far seems to be a spambot, scanned all the other check the entire office pc seems good.
wasted entire day

Oracle Free Tier Powers The MetalVPS Website

The MetalVPS website is served by a tiny, but heroic Oracle Cloud Free Tier VPS The specs are:

VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro.
OCPU count: 1
Memory (GB): 1
Boot Volume Size: 47 GB
Network bandwidth (Gbps): 0.48
Launched: Sun, Jul 17, 2022, 23:25:22 UTC

The instance has been up the best part of a year:

[opc@instance-20220717-1620 ~]$ uptime

Recent Downtime Alerts From Hetrix Tools

Recently I started receiving alerts from Hetrix Tools about the MetalVPS website being down briefly, just a few minutes at a time, but repeatedly. I confirmed that I couldn't access the website from my Chromebook during the periods when Hetrix said the site was down. Additionally, my ssh connection to the instance stopped working when Hetrix said the site was down. Luckily, I had redundant backups, so all the files were safe.

Checking the logs suggested that periodic DNF updates were causing the tiny, but valiant VPS to run out of memory. When there was no memory, the web server and the ssh server couldn't work. After the OOM killer decided it was time to kill the DNF update, then the web server and the ssh server could serve again.

Just for fun, I repeatedly ran
free -h
during a manually initiated
dnf upgrade
to see what happened. Watch the swap go all the way down to zero:

Memory Issues Fixed By Adding Swap

The memory issues seem to have been fixed by adding additional swap. Here's a link to a tutorial which I found helpful: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-add-a-swap-file-howto/

The Oracle install already had a swap file, but I added a second, larger swap file. Note that these swap files are within the partition on which the OS is located, not on separate partitions as usually is the case for swap.

Back in the old days, I always could set up machines with plenty of swap. Nowadays, on the clouds, often the VMs come without swap. On HN, I read that swap might be less popular these days since swap could present a security issue. Swap could contain private data which needs protection.

But, by adding a swap file, some tiny VPSes can do big jobs! I seem to remember compiling a ton of software out of pkgsrc on a different, but also tiny Oracle VPS running CentOS. Was it all just a matter of adding some swap and then eating dinner and sleeping while pkgsrc reliably finished its enormous workload on the tiny Oracle VPS?

Here's what the terminal output looked like during the addition of extra swap space followed by a successful
dnf upgrade
.

There have been no more downtime alerts from Hetrix since the extra swap was added.

Additional Steps

At least a couple more things might need to be done.

First, to persist past reboots, the extra swap needs to be added to /etc/fstab and/or synced with whatever systemd might contribute.

Second, the running kernel (5.4.17-2136.308.9.el8uek.x86_64) doesn't seem to be quite the same as the most recently installed kernel (5.4.17-2136.318.7.2.el8uek.x86_64). So maybe a reboot is needed?

The Bigger Picture

I don't understand why this problem happened. Also, I don't understand why this problem happened at the time it happened, rather than sooner or later.

Could it be that the tiny but heroic VM specs are too small to expect
dnf
to work?

Did I misconfigure something or make some other mistake which caused
dnf
to run out of space?

Was the current
dnf
upgrade unusually big, such that it required more space than expected.

Was the problem caused by something else other than
dnf
?

Was it correct to add a second swap file? Should there be only one? I could have replaced the existing swap file with another, larger swap file, thus keeping only one swap file.

Maybe /etc/fstab still is meaningful in systemd distros?

Maybe the VPS will survive a reboot?

How applicable is all this to other guys running tiny, but heroic Oracle Free Tier VPSes? Are they all fated to run out of memory after a while?

What about other tiny VPSes on providers other than Oracle and running OSes other than Oracle Linux?

Over the next days, maybe I will get to understand more. Thanks again to Oracle for the nifty, heroic free VPS!

Best wishes! I hope everyone gets the server he wants! 🤩

But that got me wondering, what other options are there for free dashboard/sever management tools? When I search around the net, I mostly find things talking about hosting management platforms like cPanel, DA, etc. So maybe there's some keyword I'm missing in my search, or maybe there's just too much overlap for those search.

But, it has come to the point that I feel that I should start doing stuff "the right way". Most of it I have already figured out, but when it comes to backing up containers it seems like there are many different schools. Some people save the containers as images, other use data volumes for everything, and some even run containers to backup other containers.
So far I have been managing by using data volumes and remote sql dumps, but it's getting to be a bit to much to manage. There must be a correct way to do it, or at least a few "don't do it" ways.

I figure a lot of people here must run docker, so whats your back up strategy?

Last week I ordered a KS-LE-1 from Kimsufi and it's capped to 100 mbps on ipv4, then I tested ipv6 and it's 1000 mbps network so I wanted to ask if there's any way to prioritize ipv6 over ipv4 on Plex?

I have big library of 4k remux movies and video britate can go over 180 mbps and then it start to buffer every 5 seconds on ipv4 when on ipv6 it just doesn't buffer.

I have plex on Docker, I'm not sure if it's possible to use Plex for Windows on ipv6 without going to Settings and manually disabling ipv4.

As you might know in the EU we need to display prices including VAT if we are targeting end user customers.
For example if I'm selling web hosting for EUR10, then the page needs to say EUR10 and then when they click though to order review/confirmation it needs to be split up in ex vat, vat and total.

I've tried Clientexec and it does not have the possibility to display prices with VAT.

Is there any other billing software out there that is reasonably priced (or can be had for free with hosting)?

I have 3 proxmox vms - lets call them vma.myfqdn, vmb.myfqdn and vmc.myfqdn with full dns control on my own nameservers

All 3 vms send their emails to a fourth server lets call it ms.myfqdn

vms emails are being delivered (via ms.myfqdn) through MXROUTE. With all my messing around with dns TXT records, the best I get is SPF pass when received email is checked on gmail - which is great (not in spam), but I would like the best. Gmail shows email as coming from vma,b or c.myfqdn which is what I want.

From directadmin (on mxroute) I can see my DKIM and SPF TXT records. Do these records need to be inserted in my main fqdn or do I need to enter them in to each of the vms subdomain records?

Or have I completely misunderstood something?
