Hey LES friends, I'm launching a new project and want to let you all know about it.

I'm launching OnePoundEmail.co.uk - As many of you know, I enjoy being in the hosting industry, using DirectAdmin and providing services and support to other people in the community. But as you may also know I sold my last hosting business a year ago because of my unhappiness in the industry at that time. I made a lot of mistakes in the past with my businesses and I learned a lot. I will be keeping OnePoundEmail simple, this is a sole-trader brand and not a company, and I don't have any intention to try and build a company at the moment nor to expand and try and build a global empire. My pricing is affordable but not too affordable that it takes the piss out of my provider. Some plans might be cheaper directly, some plans might be cheaper via me but ultimately I plan to provide added value to stand out in the crowd.

Have a look at the website here: https://onepoundemail.co.uk

The Basics:

DirectAdmin based email hosting

SMTP, IMAP and POP3 protocols

Custom SpamAssassin ruleset

Multiple premium webmail options

Mobile apps for iOS/Android

Highly reputable IP addresses

300 outbound limit per hour

Server located in Germany, EU

Hi,

I found this could be helpful for many people looking to create multiple Plesk email accounts especially since we are getting a lot of migrations from the old Google Gsuite Legacy edition.

The script reuires a txt file where the emails must be listed 1 per line :

#!/bin/bash
while read user
do
plesk bin mail --create $user -passwd 12345@@ -mbox_quota 25000M -mailbox true
done < userfile.txt

The script may fail if your secuity standards for your passwords are too high so you may edit that 12345
@ if needed.

By default i have aligned this at 15000M or 15G to equal Legacy Google Workspace accounts.

I hope this helps

Even if it is too late when someone else logs in as root on your server, it is good to know that NOW is the time to get working on your security.

To setup email notification, login to your server as root.
Edit .bashrc

editor .bashrc

add the following line at the end, changing “ServerName” to the hostname of your server and “email@thisaddress.com” to your own email address.

echo 'ALERT - Root Shell Access (ServerName) on:' `date` `who` | mail -s "Alert: Root Access from `who | cut -d"(" -f2 | cut -d")" -f1`" email@thisaddress.com

!NOTE! - Take notice of the ` in the code block. Sometimes when copying code from a webpage, these small characters will mess up when pasted.

Save and exit your .bashrc.

Next time someone, hopefully you, logs on as root, you will get an email about this.

This can be done for any user, you only have to make sure that the user can email out from your server.

Quick Tip: Use the guide here to install and configure a Low Resource SMTP Server.

How or what type of emails do you use for signing up for accounts with web hosts/ SAAS providers/ service providers (online and offline) in general ?

Some of the ways I have come across and or used are:

Create a domain with multiple email accounts, one ID per provider (e.g. les@mydomain.tld, let@mydomain.tld.etc)

Using alias with existing email address like gmail, zoho, domain, etc. (e.g. name+les@gmail.com) Also See the comment from @Groentjuh below.

Use an email relay or forwarding service like ImprovMX or Altmail (or others, pick your favourite)

Using a temporary or disposable email (pick your favourite)

Using anti spam software (which one?? )

Use a Faux email address (I call this the Duh! method - basically two accounts with same or different providers, one email is the 'front face' other is the real email that you use. Set up forward from the front face to the real email account)

As of this morning IST,
I finished the draft of a post this morning on a related topic, in which I list the above 6 options. The post ran to over 3,700 words, so will not bother you with a link right now. Maybe the finished version.

Then I saw this post by @Groentjuh int he offer thread
https://talk.lowendspirit.com/discussion/comment/55594/#Comment_55594

example+novos@gmail.com will just go to example@gmail.com. It's a simple way to allow you to use "unique" emails for each sign-up. In case of gmail, it also ignores any dots. So e.x.a.m.p.l.e@gmail.com will also go to example@gmail.com. Alternative options are having an catch-all email account on their own domains or creating aliases for each service.

Since the two are quite related, I decided to post this discussion, with the below questions:

Are there any other methods that you use?

Which is your preferred system for masquerading or protecting real email(s) ?

Which of the above 6 methods in your opinion are suitable for beginners intermediate/advanced?

Thanks !

Hello dear fellow LESbians

I would like your precious feedback on the "Email archiving" subject. The need is to keep all domain emails (Inbox, Sent + User folders) archived centrally for future reference.

Current setup

Domain email is setup on @jarland 's awesome service. Six users (currently but expecting the number to grow) connect via Microsoft Office Outlook POP3 and download their emails. All messages are saved locally on Outlook .PST (which is a PITA to manage and backup). This setup is problematic both because of PST management and issues with mobile devices (IMAP devices don't see Sent emails that were sent from Microsoft Office Outlook).

What I would like to accomplish

Keep Microsoft Office Outlook (since they don't want to switch to another email client) and setup all clients to use IMAP.

Setup a "solution" that will archive all emails for all users on a device within the business (not on a cloud service). Older emails (definition of older to be decided) will be removed from the IMAP server and only kept on archive.

Users or/and the IT admin will need to have access to the archive, whenever needed.

The "solution" should be able to archive directly from IMAP server (all main folders like Inbox, Sent, ect + any user created folders)

The "solution" should be able to be scheduled. Probably quite a few times per hour.

I would prefer a "solution" that does not require to create a catch-all mailbox. Just the users' mailboxes (no need to worry about changing passwords, because the users can not change it).

For starters the "solution" should support 10 users (expecting to grow)

Easy to backup the "solution" (like copy files, (my)SQL backup, etc. NOT something ugly like .PST)

The "solution" should be able to work without any email client installed on the machine (since it will not be installed on users' computers).

Linux or Windows (but preferably Windows)

I am evaluating both free and paid solutions.

What I have seen so far:

https://www.mailstore.com/en/products/mailstore-home/
Pros: Free, Windows, Really (really!) easy to use, Easy backup of archived data, additional feratures
Cons: Scheduling via Task Manager is impossible (or very hard even - found the way to run it through TS but the process remains running (so it doesn't run the next schedule).

https://www.mailstore.com/en/products/mailstore-server/
Pros: Same as above
Cons: 295€ for just 5 users and the price increases as the number of users grow

https://www.mailpiler.org/
Pros: Professional email archiving, Open Source
Cons: Needs extensive setup, needs addition catch-all mailbox, not very user friendly, needs resolvable hostname on the running mailpiler server

imapsync
Pros: Easy to setup
Cons: Needs to setup an additional IMAP server (within the business) to copy messages to, which I would rather avoid.

How would YOU handle such a case? Thoughts, opinions, discussion....

(Post approved by Anthony, provided I haven't misunderstood any of his intent)

Hey everyone!

I know a lot of you already from LET, but new faces pop up all the time and I'd like to introduce my business to you. For those that are already friends, an update on how we're doing as a commitment to the LES forum, written just for you and not just pasted from our blog or another forum

Who are we?

MXroute is an email provider that seeks to challenge the standards of the industry in pricing strategy and outbound delivery consistency. Inbound is far from ignored, but I always say that anyone can run an inbound mail server, the real work is the outbound.

How are we challenging the industry?

You see, being able to get your email to Gmail, Hotmail, Verizon, AT&T, Yahoo, and the companies owned by those companies from one server is increasingly difficult, if not almost impossible. Frankly, when all of those are on the table, it's not common that one IP or even IP range can do the job. Formerly, we utilized MailChannels to deal with IP reputation and delivery issues to some of the more difficult to reach providers (let's be honest, AT&T made me give up back then). As great as it was, their efforts to protect their own systems led to excessive false positives which blocked legitimate outbound mail, and their algorithms would kick someone down for an odd sending pattern without warning or immediate recourse. That's why we've put together our own outbound system that will retry failed deliveries from up to 3 IP ranges before giving up. We don't really fail any delivery anymore except when customers send to non-existent recipients. We're pretty proud of what we've built, and I'm convinced that it's the most reliable outbound email infrastructure in the world. I realize exactly how bold of a claim that is.

Our challenge to the pricing structure of the industry is much more compatible with the way you all think about pricing and features, because it's much closer to how shared hosting or a VPS might be priced, and less like how email tends to be priced. We charge based on storage, that's it. No limit to domains or email accounts, just the overall storage used per service (aka purchased package).

What's new?

For those of you that have been around and watched us grow since late 2013, you might also appreciate the changes we've made on the business side in the last year. We are a registered LLC in the state of Texas, and MXroute does actually employ a full time employee (Hi!), as opposed to being a side project (it was quite a side project, but it was never first priority every day). Because of that, we've brought back more traditional support as well, offering email support to all of our customers (in addition to the existing community forum/chat). That was a big request from LET members, I recall.

Recently I migrated emails to my server (cPanel with MailChannels) (around 12 June) and since then customer is having problem with specific email addresses (specifically in sending).

If he sends (using Outlook/Thunderbird/MailSpring and other clients) any email to specific email address from his office/home (different computer/mobiles devices) it bounce back. He also run multiple tests via mail-tester/sparkpost/dkimvalidator (and you name it) all fails and shows DKIM/SPF/DMARC has issue.
(When he tries to send via webmail (Roundcube/Horde) no issue and it works just fine)

When I do the same (as he did) from my end, everything passes and works like a charm (no bounceback, DKIM/SPF all are validated without single error).

I am unable to understand what causing the issue, would it be email client (thunderbird, outlook) somehow modifying email headers (If yes then he already ran with different devices and clients) ? Or is it something related to their ISP or local firewall settings? I can provide test email header if you need to look into.

Thanks everyone, any help or suggestion would be great.

Hope you're all well at this unusual time!

I'm trying to de-Google my life a bit - especially now my GSuite cost is going up. Part of that is moving my email away from there - and I'm trying to find a nice email client for my phone and my (arch linux) desktop.

On desktop, I don't particularly like the look of Thunderbird, but it seems to work well. I've been experimenting with mutt, which I really like - but no mobile alternative.

On iOS, I liked Canary Mail - it's not cheap, but it's super powerful and has support for aliases and more. However, their privacy policy says (regarding email login details) that "All of this information is stored on your device and is never transferred to our servers." When I logged all my mobile traffic using Charles Proxy, I saw that it's phoning home to them (dev.canarymail.io:9001/post/unsubscribe) with a device identifier and my email addresses, even though I've (a) disabled analytics and (b) disabled push notifications. So I no longer feel I can trust them entirely, and ended up moving to Outlook, which is actually a very well put together app - much better than I expected.

I'm intrigued to know what other people are using for email - do you have an email setup that works well for you?

I'm curious about your hot takes about MailCheap.co vs MXRoute vs other alternatives I'm probably missing.

I know that MXRoute is an all-around solid service, that's definitely in a cheaper price bracket than MailCheap.co, Zoho, GApps, etc. I'm curious about alternatives, and it seems MailCheap advertises itself as an "enterprise" alternative, albeit from what I can tell, its support might be weaker and it has reneged on its pricing before.

Have any of you guys used other services and do you guys have any thoughts about these services?

Heimdall: An open-source personal email guardian

I came across this piece of OSS that could be useful for some of you: [Link] / [Github]

In broad strokes, here's a summary of what Heimdall does:

Heimdall is a self-hosted email alias/forwarding service

It's a self-hosted and self-managed service, you have complete control over your data

It allows you to:
1. Receive safely: Receive emails on single-use aliases and forward them to your personal inbox.
2. Reply anonymously: Reply to emails from your alias without revealing your personal email address.
3. Attachments: Attachments are supported on incoming and outgoing emails (subject to size limits - see below).
4. Email commands: Manage your aliases through email directly - no separate app or website required.
5. Usage stats: Easily check the usage stats of each alias.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with this project. I read the article and wanted to know what you think of it.

Hello currently I need to setup a new VPS for email duties, I'm planning to use a small KVM VPS (512MB RAM, 50GB HD, 1 shared core).
My feature requirements are:

Multiple domain support

Multiple email accounts

Storage quotas

Vacation response

Easy managment (I will only setup the VPS and another person will add the mail accounts as they are needed)

Admin GUI

Ability to rate limit (per domain and email account)

SMTP, IMAP, POP3

Webmail

I have considered the following options:

Mail in a box

Mail Cow

VestaCP / HestiaCP

DirectAdmin (Free License provided by the provider)

Redmail (is discarded as it requires a subscription for some functions that are needed)

Which one would you suggest as a better alternative from the ones I mentioned or do you kown a better option?
