Hey all,

We're in the process of (extremely slowly) cleaning up and prepping to move out of one of our warehouses to a new location and throughout this process I've seen that we have a lot of stuff that is non-business-critical and thus becomes e-waste. I don't want to throw it away, and I don't want to become an eBay reseller. The next best idea: free stuff (on LES only).

General rules:
* Your account should have more activity (not spammy) than mine to be considered. There isn't a hard-and-fast rule, if you think you qualify then make a claim.
* Wait 24 hours between "claims" on parts to give others a chance to chime in and get something.
* Items will have a per-claim quantity limit listed if one exists, this resets every 24hrs with the general claim rules.
* You provide us a shipping label at your expense, as well as the required importation docs to be included with said label, if necessary. I do not have the administrative manpower to deal with this, so it is non-negotiable. We will provide all packing materials and package it appropriately. We ship from Spokane, WA, USA.
* I will not and cannot test every piece of hardware here. They worked when pulled, but some of these items have been sitting for 2+ years. No guarantees--accept that risk BEFORE you send us a shipping label. There are no guarantees, refunds, replacements, warranties or anything of that nature. We will test the servers for POST/BIOS before packing due to the hassle and cost of shipping full chassis.
* I can and probably will change rules at any given time, for any given reason. If I forgot something or there is some 'technicality' allowing unintended actions, I will simply change the rules and ignore the request. This is a best-effort giveaway for no reason other than to hope someone can get some decent hardware and use it.

Process to claiming:
1. Reply with the ITEM and QUANTITY requested clearly readable (other conversation/jokes/etc also encouraged, just keep it separated so it is easy to see)
2. I will reply to you and confirm the request publicly as I get around to it, but if you were first you will have first dibs (sans some disqualifying reason).
3. After it has been confirmed, PM me here with ITEM, QUANTITY, and a LINK to your confirmation post by me.
4. We will get you package dimensions and weight, you will give us label and it will go out.

Things I will flat out ignore (and likely never accept a claim from you):
1. Not following procedure above/blatantly ignoring posted procedure and wasting my time.
2. Begging, hassling me/any members of Crunchbits via tickets, PMs, other means.

Overall, intent is to have some fun and share some decent gear.

This thread will be constantly updated with new stuff, so check the newest posts for updated parts availability lists

EASTER EGG HUNT

There is something somewhere in this post that I found to be silly, maybe slightly ridiculous and it makes me laugh. You're probably overthinking it. But it is there.

If you find it, and you are the first (or work with friends and you decide to split prizes somehow) here is what you can claim 1 of:

RTX 3090 (probably used)

NIB 65" 4K TV

3x 1U servers of better quality than what was listed here and more .. stuff inside them

Good luck

Hey peoples,

So as a part of the project I am currently working on I am going to be doing some free shared webhosting. Just for small sites to help people get into it and get things up and running. These accounts are not meant for full blown, big hit count sites but should be alright for low traffic, static, or even a blog that has low traffic.

I am giving out five accounts to start but I wish to see them used. Which means if you do not intend to use it please do not take one.

The package is:

1.5 GB Space
50 GB Bandwidth
2 Domains
10 Sub Domains
2 Databases
2 Emails

The server utilizes Debian 11, Mariadb, PHP 8.1, Apache with Nginx proxy, LetsEncrypt, PhpMyAdmin, it has an installer with WordPress is that is your fancy.

The server is located in Seattle.

Basically these are test runs to see how things will pan out, but hey it is a free account.

If you are interested letme know here and I shall PM login details.

This offer is exclusive to LES as I have stopped visiting the OGF.

This post is originally published on yoursunny.com blog https://yoursunny.com/t/2020/OracleCloud-website/

Oracle Cloud is a cloud computing service offered by Oracle Corporation.
Oracle Cloud has a generous free tier that offers two "always free" Micro instances with the following specification:

KVM virtualization

1/8 CPU cores (AMD EPYC 7551)

1GB memory

47GB disk storage

1 IPv4 address

up to 32 IPv6 addresses

50Mbps Internet bandwidth

I signed up for Oracle Cloud, so that I can have some more free computing resources to play with.
The sign-up procedure requires a credit card for identity confirmation purpose, but the credit card will not be charged.
During sign-up, there's a choice of home region, which determines the location of VM instances; once selected, it cannot be changed in the future.

A common use case for a virtual machine is to host a website.
Due to the firewalls, hosting a website on Oracle Cloud needs a few more steps.
Here's exactly how to deploy a website in a Oracle Cloud Free Tier VM instance.

UPDATED 2022-01-27:
Oracle Cloud now supports IPv6.
Instructions are updated to enable IPv6 on the web server.

Create a VM Instance

Each Oracle Cloud account is eligible for two Always Free Micro instances.
To create a VM, sign in to the Oracle Cloud console, in "Launch Resources" section click Create a VM instance.
This takes us to the "Create Compute Instance" page.

In "Image and shape" section, select VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro shape and Canonical Ubuntu 20.04 image.
Do not use the "Canonical Ubuntu 20.04 Minimal" image.

In "Configure network" section, select Create new virtual cloud network, and keep other options at their default values.

In "Add SSH keys" section, select Paste public keys, and paste your SSH public key in the text box below.
If you do not have a SSH public key, follow this guide to generate one.

Finally, click the Create button to create the compute VM instance.
Within a few seconds, you should see the "Instance Details" page.

You can SSH into the VM instance using the public IP address and username displayed in the "Instance Access" section.

Enable IPv6

In this year, it is important for websites to support IPv6.
Today, most cellular networks are IPv6 only.
By enabling IPv6, it enables mobile users to access your website more efficiently, because their sessions do not need to go through IPv4 address translation proxies.

Oracle Cloud compute VM instances are initially assigned with only an IPv4 address.
There are 5 steps for enabling IPv6 on the VM:

Assign IPv6 CIDR block to the Virtual Cloud Network.

Assign IPv6 CIDR block to the Subnet.

Configure IPv6 Route Rule.

Assign IPv6 Address to the compute VM's VNIC.

Configure firewall rules.

We will perform steps 1~4 now, and do step 5 a little later (in "Configure Ingress and Egress Rules" section).

Looking at the "Instance Details" page, click the link next to "Virtual cloud network".
This takes us to the "Virtual Cloud Network Details" page.

Select "CIDR Blocks" tab on the left side "Resources" menu, and then click Add IPv6 CIDR Block button.
You will be asked to confirm that you want to enable IPv6.
When you click Confirm, a /56 block of 4,722,366,482,869,645,213,696 IPv6 addresses are automatically allocated to your Virtual Cloud Network (IPv6 step 1).

Select "Subnets" tab on the left side "Resources" menu.
You should see an existing Subnet.
It would have an IPv4 CIDR Block, but the "IPv6 CIDR Block" column is blank.
Click the ⋮ button in the rightmost column, and select "Edit" in the dropdown menu.
Then, check Enable IPv6 CIDR Block box, enter two hexadecimal digits (such as
00
) in the box just before "::/64", and click Save Changes (IPv6 step 2).

Select "Route Tables" tab on the left side "Resources" menu, and then click Default Route Table link.
This takes us to the "Route Table Details" pages.
In the "Route Rules" tables, we can see that there's a route rule for destination
0.0.0.0/0
that targets the Internet gateway, which allows IPv4 packets to reach the Internet.
We need a similar route rule for IPv6.
Click Add Route Rules button.
In the popup dialog, enter the following:

Protocol Version: IPv6

Target Type: Internet Gateway

Destination CIDR Block:
::/0

Target Internet Gateway: Internet gateway vcn-…

Then click Add Route Rules button (IPv6 step 3).

Finally, go back to the "Instance Details" page of the compute VM instance.
To find that page, you can type "Instances" into the search bar and select "Services - Instances (Compute)" in the results.

Select "Attached VNICs" tab on the left side "Resources" menu, and then click the link next to (Primary VNIC).
This opens the "VNIC Details".
Select "IPv6 Addresses" tab on the left side "Resources" menu, and click Assign IPv6 Address button.
In the popup dialog, click Assign button to get a random IPv6 address (IPv6 step 4).

DNS

Now that we have the IP addresses assigned, it is a good time to add DNS records to our compute VM instance, so that we can activate HTTPS later.
Two DNS records are required: an A record for the public IPv4 address and an AAAA record for the public IPv6 address.
You can find both addresses in the "VNIC Details" page, as described above.

Configure Ingress and Egress Rules

Oracle Cloud has a strict firewall that, by default, only allows SSH access.
In order to host a website, it is necessary to configure the firewall so that it allows HTTP traffic.

To access the firewall configuration page, click the "subnet" name in "Primary VNIC" section of "Instance Details" page.
Then, on "Subnet Details" page, click "Default Security List for …" in "Security Lists" section.
Click Add Ingress Rules button, and enter these four rules in the popup dialog:

Allow HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 (IPv4)

stateless: no

source CIDR:
0.0.0.0/0

IP protocol:
TCP

destination port range:
80,443

Allow HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 (IPv6)

stateless: no

source CIDR:
::/0

IP protocol:
TCP

destination port range:
80,443

Allow HTTP/3 (IPv4)

stateless: no

source CIDR:
0.0.0.0/0

IP protocol:
UDP

destination port range:
443

Allow HTTP/3 (IPv6)

stateless: no

source CIDR:
::/0

IP protocol:
UDP

destination port range:
443

After that, you should see the following ingress rules in the table:

You should also add an IPv6 egress rule, so that the VM instance can reach Internet resources over IPv6.
To do that, select "Egress Rules" tab on the left side "Resources" menu.
Click Add Egress Rules button, and enter the following rule in the popup dialog (IPv6 step 5):

Allow IPv6 Internet access

stateless: no

destination CIDR:
::/0

IP protocol:
All Protocols

Install HTTP Server

With the firewall rules in place, we are ready to install an HTTP server.
In this guide, I'm installing Caddy HTTP server along with PHP-FPM.
They can be installed from Caddy package repository and ondrej/php PPA respectively.

# see "Caddy package repository" link above for how to add Caddy APT repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/php
sudo apt install caddy php8.1-fpm

Before we can start the HTTP server, there's one more firewall to configure: the local iptables.
Oracle Cloud not only has an external firewall at subnet level, but also blocks traffic in iptables INPUT chain.
We can setup a systemd service to insert iptables rules before Caddy starts:

sudoedit /etc/systemd/system/caddy-iptables.service
  (paste the caddy-iptables.service content)

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now caddy-iptables

The systemd unit file
caddy-iptables.service
should have the following content:

[Unit]
Description=Firewall rules for Caddy
Before=caddy.service

[Service]
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStartPre=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -I INPUT -p udp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStart=true
RemainAfterExit=yes
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/iptables -D INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/iptables -D INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/iptables -D INPUT -p udp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -D INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -D INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
ExecStopPost=+/usr/sbin/ip6tables -D INPUT -p udp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT

[Install]
RequiredBy=caddy.service

Upload your website content, and make sure the
www-data
group can access them.
In this example, I'll create two simple files:

sudo mkdir -p /var/www/html
echo '<h1>hello</h1>' | sudo tee /var/www/html/index.html
echo '<?php phpinfo(); ?>' | sudo tee /var/www/html/phpinfo.php
sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www/html

Edit the Caddyfile (
/etc/caddy/Caddyfile
), paste the following:
(change the domain name and root directory as appropriate)

{
  servers {
    protocol {
      experimental_http3
    }
  }
}

https://demo.example.com {
  root * /var/www/html
  file_server
  php_fastcgi unix//run/php/php8.1-fpm.sock

  header {
    Strict-Transport-Security max-age=2592000
    X-Frame-Options SAMEORIGIN
    X-Content-Type-Options nosniff
    Referrer-Policy no-referrer-when-downgrade
  }
}

Finally, restart the webserver for the settings to take effect:

sudo systemctl restart caddy
sudo systemctl restart php8.1-fpm

Test the Website

To confirm everything is working, we can visit the index page
https://demo.example.com/
and the PHP script
https://demo.example.com/phpinfo.php
in the browser.

Then, we use the curl command line tool (on a different machine) to check that:

HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect is working properly.

The website is served over HTTP/1.0, HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3.

The server is accessible over both IPv4 and IPv6.

Hi all,

In the spirit of my last post regarding free DirectAdmin hosting, I’m back to order four free DirectAdmin reseller accounts (no overselling permitted on these) to members here.

You’ll get 5 GB of SSD or NVMe space (depending on which box has more availability), can create up to 5 child accounts and unlimited bandwidth and other features (yet again, outbound mail is blocked).

This will be free for 1 year. The location is Las Vegas.

Please fill out this form and PM me with it to request a reseller account:

**Intended Usage:** [Brief description of how you intend to use it]

**Your Name:**
**Contact Email:**
**Abuse Plan:** [Please describe your plan to handle abuse promptly and ensure no abusive accounts are made/used]

I understand that this is a free service offered and that if I am found abusing the service (resource-intensive scripts, malware, phishing, etc) is grounds for termination. I understand that this is a free service and that no backups are taken nor provided, and any data I store on this machine is at my own risk should any data loss occur.

I furthermore agree that **any and all** abuse by either myself or any one of the users I’ve created via my reseller account will immediately constitute termination of all my reseller and the accounts created underneath at the sole discretion of Geek Solutions providing me this service free of charge.

**Agreement:** (y/n)

Please don’t ruin a good thing for other users by abusing it.

I will update the thread as slots become available/unavailable.

Cheers

I have been looking for a free VPS for testing purpose over the last couple of years. I don't have credit cards or I am not willing to expose my credit cards to the Web, in order to protect myself. However, there are no ready to use free VPS for me to test before buying.

Four biggest free VPS providers - Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle - all request you for credit cards, they scare me away. Several smaller VPS providers do the same thing. Those without such requirements impose other restrictions, such as a reciprocal links, posting reviews or comments on their forums. There are even VPS providers that are just phishing your data, without any further information after I have ordered their free accounts.

Results: no free VPS without creditcard requirements in its real sense. In another words, there are no free VPS in the same sense as free virtual hosting. Although free hosting is of low quality, still you can get them in abundance. But you cannot get free VPS as easy as free hosting. Why?

Can anyone share your information and experiences?

Free Soyoustart dedicated bare metal server share with other LES folks?

Features of a full user level shell account on a dedicated bare metal shared server include:

-- every user typically can see the processor load averages,

-- find out how many other user accounts there are all together,

-- find out how many other users are logged in, and

-- even see some of commands that other users are running. For example, as many of you know, a quick overview may be obtained with the w(1) command.

-- When problems occur on bare metal, it can be helpful instantly to eliminate the virtualization layer as a possible trouble spot simply because, on dedicated bare metal, there is no virtualization layer (unless the user is running LXD, qemu or similar at the user level).

Hopefully, not everybody is trying to run heavy load, long run time programs simultaneously. Getting along can take a bit of inter-user co-ordination, and there's always the nice(1) command.

Recently, from an offer on LET, I snagged two Soyoustart servers: SYS-LE-1 - Intel Xeon D-1521 - 32GB DDR4 ECC 2133MHz - 2x 2To HDD SATA Soft RAID - symmetrical 250 Mbps. Multiple IPv4 addresses are available. The servers are in Canada at OVH's BHS datacenter.

Since the Spirit of the LET community has moved here to LES, I thought I might express my gratitude to LET here at LES. Would anyone like a free user account? Would anyone volunteer to help administer? Maybe Ubuntu 18.04 server plus LXD? For now, I'm just asking questions--no promises yet about who might be accepted, exactly when this might start, or how long this might last.

I hope to learn a lot. I hope to get to know some of you. And we'll have fun!

Thanks LES!

I know BuyVM offer free DirectAdmin & so do InceptionHosting (UK location through Clouvider) but who else? Just looking to make a list to prefer those when I need it & will definitely be useful for everyone else interested in free DA as well
