I am initiating a discussion on CDNs for WordPress.

Main types I have tried/ used so far include:

Scripts (js and css)

Images

Videos

Audio

What are the typical CDNs you use/ have used? Please classify under Free/ Freemium/ Freemium, also the primaty use case. Would be great to create a list as a resource to the community. The info can be in the following format:

Name of CDN --> Type (Free/Freemium...) ---> Primary use case ---> Your experience /short review.

For example, I use Shortpixel for image compression. optimization and Shortpixel Adaptive Image for image delivery. Both offer a freemium model.

Shortpixel --> Freemium --> Image compression or optimization --> My review: This wordpress plugin is my facvourite for reducing size of images. If you look around for a deal, you may get upto 25,000 credits for around 10 or 12 US dollars, enough for most sites. Do you need this at all? For image compression - not really, There are Cli tools available for Mac and Windows (jpegoptim, optipng...) that to the job. But for the beginner/ eeryday used, much recommended. Linky link: https://wordpress.org/plugins/shortpixel-image-optimiser/)

p.s: using the wrong settings for CDN OR tinkering around too much with the settings can result in a broken site. My blog is a classic example of it!

I thought of creating this thread as the title above suggests. Some Beta programs are not exactly free, but several providers offer a free upgrade to beta testers. Or they offer discounts and you are able to use the tools that otherwise would cost substantially higher than $ 7.

My recommendations -July 2020

I have been toying around with the two following tools recently. They are-
Pixelied for graphic design Link. (You can read my detailed review here
and
Cleaver Cloud - similar to Runcloud or Server Avatar Link: https://cleaver.cloud

Both are in beta, and in particular I am rather impressed by Pixelied. You can create, resize, edit images, download JPG, PNG or transparent PNGs. I have used the assets for production grade work - images for our podcasts, social media, blog and some posts on LES.

Cleaver is a little quirky - required Ubuntu 20.04 (only) and that might not be up to everyone's tastes. But
worth a try- I recall a few posts in which folks were interested in learning more about /trying out some fo the tools like Runcloud.
Rather than plan vanilla WP or CMS "x" only - you get a bit of a choice including node.js

Somebody here PMed me asking advice on preparing for an English exam. Maybe somebody else who is studying English might be able to use what I said in reply, so I am also posting my reply here in Free Offers because it is about a free course and a free test:

There is a test called the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which is widely taken by people who wish to study in the US.

A free TOEFL course starts today.

As you also can read on the above linked page, EdX (Education X) and ETSX (Educational Testing Service X) seem also to be offering the TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) take it at home test for free due to the pandemic.

In addition to the EdX test prep course and the TOEFL iBT, I suggest reading stuff that's both (1) short and (2) very famous. For example, in politics, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence. For short stories, maybe "A Dissertation on Roast Pig," by Charles Lamb and "The Lady, or the Tiger?" by Frank Stockton. For poems, maybe "The Road Not Taken," by Robert Frost, and "Invictus," by William Earnest Henley. For computer folks, "Reflections on Trusting Trust," by Ken Thompson.

Cheers,

I am curious:
Which services/apps/solutions do you host yourself, instead of using external service providers?

I guess most of us know this list:
https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
Which of the solutions on the list can you recommend or do you have something to add that the list is not carrying?

Looking forward to your inspirational posts and self-hosted solutions!
