Email Privacy

• MetalVPS uses Migadu for email. Thus, emails will at least pass through and probably will be stored at Migadu. Emails can be encrypted for additional privacy. MetalVPS stores, in plain text on @Not_Oles' Chromebook, a local working copy of some emails and other server Neighbor data, such as passwords and server logs. @Not_Oles also keeps a local, plain text backup on a removable hard disk.

Today I first heard about systemd-nspawn when andrewstuart mentioned it on HN.

Doesn't look like there has been much mention of nspawn here on LES, but there is a Debian wiki page and an Arch wiki page. There is a man page on FreeDesktop.org.

Quoting from the Arch wiki: "systemd-nspawn may be used to run a command or OS in a light-weight namespace container. . . . systemd-nspawn is a simpler tool to configure than LXC or Libvirt." Hmm, simple configuration sounds pretty good!

There seems to be an nspawn.org website, which talks about a wrapper script for easier install, and there is a Github repo as well.

Might a server with a bunch of nspawn containers create an easily configured Low End Empire? 💰

Installed Stuff

• We're just beginning on this Node.

• So far, gcc, git, lxc, qemu-kvm, zsh, and more are installed. Additional configuration is required, but MetalVPSians should be able to compile, to create unprivileged LXC containers, and to create KVM virtual machines.

• Possibilities include installing Go, Plan9port, Docker and Nix. Plus code-server, oksh, Xv6, plan9port, LAMP stack. Plus more. If you want something, please let us know!

Bug Report

• Following the upgrade to sid, reboots sometimes fail to complete until after power is reset. Following power reset, the Node reboots successfully. The issue happened on multiple servers, so it seems not to be a hardware problem.

• The problem might be with dbus. Here is some log output for a failed reboot. The errors at the end seem similar to Debian Bug 877642.

Installed Stuff

• We're just beginning on this Node.

• So far, gcc, git, lxc, qemu-kvm, zsh, and more are installed. Additional configuration still is required, but MetalVPSians eventually should be able to compile, to create unprivileged LXC containers, and (if added to the kvm group) to create KVM virtual machines.

FWIW, my first time with Rawhide. Also my first time with btrfs. Used the default Anaconda install.

With KVM and LXC and other virtualization technologies being very popular now, chroot might not seem needed very often any more. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun last night making a chroot environment.

With debootstrap, the chroot was super fast and easy to set up. It seems to work okay, has network access, I can ssh in, etc.

Wikipedia's chroot article tells the very interesting history of chroot, beginning with its introduction in v7 Unix in 1979. The linked Wikipedia article also contains an interesting section on the limitations of chroot. However, the limitations might not be especially significant for every use case.

Is it too crazy to imagine that chroot still might be very useful today? For example, if all one needs is a quick test of something? As another example, Hetzner uses chroot in Installimage, which is one of Hetzner's methods to install Operating Systems on dedicated servers.

I hope to learn more about the unshare system call, which Installimage uses in the function execute_chroot_command_wo_debug(), and which "allows a process (or thread) to disassociate parts of its execution context that are currently being shared with other processes (or threads)."

What's New?

• Proxmox seems to have been installed on a MetalVPS antique Intel node at Hetzner FSN1.

• Want a free account? Maybe with sudo? 👍 Right now plenty of server resources are available because there is nobody using the FSN1 node except @Not_Oles. Fair use, but your VM specs don't have to be tiny. 🐷

• Maybe VMs might be IPv6/128 only for now? If you have only IPv4, perhaps head over to Route48.org or Hurricane Electric Tunnel Broker to add free IPv6 capability. Also consider putting your web service behind a CDN which allows access via IPv4.

Happily, Darkstar will continue to run Slackware64-current. Also, in a perfect example of the kindness and generosity which always has characterized Darkstar's users, her buyer suggested without being asked that I leave my user account and root privileges in place for free. As a courtesy, a few less active user accounts were backed up and then removed incident to the transfer.

I doubt that I will visit Darkstar often, but I know for sure that I will visit her from time to time. I will log in whenever I want to remember the greatest of good times that I always enjoyed within Darkstar's community. I send karmic thanks to Darkstar's buyer, and to all our Darkstar neighbors. Fast-as-metal server share from MetalVPS.com!

Hetzner AX101 Ryzen 9 5950X Vermeer Zen 3!

Current Offer

Shell account. Shared unlimited access to all resources. At least processor cores could be dedicated if a neighbor uses taskset or a similar tool.

This current setup means, for example, that a single neighbor could run more than one VPS using qemu, could use more than one IPv4, or could store terabytes of data files, etc. Currently there are two terrific neighbors, 🤩 or three if we include me, @Not_Oles. 🤔 Nobody is using significant resources -- thus, much remains available.

No GUI on the node yet. No web control panel yet. Just command line on the node for now. Of course, you can put whatever you want inside your VPS, and we also can add to the node.

The node has git, gcc, and many of their friends.

IPv4 Additional IP Connectivity Status

Neighbors currently using qemu have forwarded ports on the node IPv4 and qemu slirp user mode networking. You can see from the yabs that the slirp speed seems okay.

Both IPv4 and IPv6 additional IPs worked fine on the node and inside VMs when the server was running Proxmox, so I imagine the current issue with the additional IPv4s not working in qemu has to do with my clueless configuration. 😵

I have been reading documentation on qemu.org, on linux-kvm.org, and elsewhere. If I don't succeed in getting IPv4 additional IP connectivity working soon, I will post about it so you guys can pass me a clue. Meanwhile I am enjoying what I wanted, slowly 🐢 learning a little of how the configuration works instead of having Proxmox do it for me.

Nobody has tried LXC yet. But I am sure we will get around to LXC before too long. 🔜
