I can always tell when BF is coming up; just getting my renewal notices arriving in my mailbox :)
-
(Quote) Wow, that must be a pretty special deal from them - that much RAM and storage isn't far off that per month on their website =)
-
(Quote) I had to hard refresh to get it to come up. It's pretty slick, and generates some awfully nice prices. Does the order button work? :)
-
(Quote) You're right of course; I got lured into feeding because I was bored in my hotel room and I should have just gone and got an early beer. This is, happily, a lesson worth learning :-)

(Quote) Meh; his opening post was "this is a scam, I'm doing a chargeback" without any information about what problems he had actually had (nodes, locations, any actual facts that could have been looked at to help). The OP DID NOT WANT any…

(Quote) Needs? I already have all the servers I require for my needs. This is more about the craving for ... let's call them spares. Although I should probably install something on my last idler before adding yet another one!
-
(Quote) Do you get that much abuse from that? I (perhaps naively) assumed that web serving was a fairly prime VPS use. Also, which of your locations is least ... troubled, in case I was to grab an offer =)
-
(Quote) Oof. No port 80/443? I'm used to SMTP being closed off, but ruling out web services too is ... kinda limiting :)
-
(Quote) tbh there's a lot of alternate SBCs that are better designed for a lot of stuff and have a less stressed supply chain; the Pis are great for general purpose tinkering but these days unless you're looking to use Pi-specific hardware add-ons I…

(Quote) I continue to be amazed at how patient and polite you've managed to be through all of this. Don't think I have the temperament to be a hoster!
-
(Quote) They've spoken pretty extensively and openly about it - a blend of supply (as with everyone else on the planet, they're finding it hard to get enough silicon in) and demand (which went through the roof as soon as Covid hit and still hasn't r…

(Quote) So you handed over money to someone - but you have no idea who and no record of it ever happening - and you think you bought a legitimate service? You're not even a very good troll. Just stealing resources from actual customers.
-
(Quote) That is an obvious lie.
-
(Quote) Then you're not even a customer of Virmach, so their TOS are meaningless to you. You're a customer of the scalper, so your anger should be directed at him and he owes you a refund. Virmach owes you nothing.
-
(Quote) I'm pretty sure this isn't a "buy your way out of jail" situation. Just apologise for your poor customers for the situation you have put them in.
-
(Quote) I... do not think you comprehend what a "contract" is. Regardless, if you bought an account from a third party (in direct violation of this term) then you aren't a customer of Virmach anyway, so they have literally no obligation t…

(Quote) Section 4J - "I) Assignment: This Agreement and the rights granted and obligations undertaken hereunder may not be transferred, assigned or delegated in any manner by Customer, but may be so transferred, assigned or delegated by VirMach…

Only ended up with one; if they'd had any storage better located I'd have had one too, but will have to see what BF brings. Now I just need to figure out why I needed it!
-
Was hard to resist grabbing them as they appeared :)
-
(Quote) I haven't had to open a ticket in months, but I think The Backlog has been pretty drastically brought under control these days. What's the average wait time now @Virmach? :)
-
(Quote) I suspect that experience has taught that all you get for that is server abuse during that period, and still no legit details from the 98% who know what's coming. If you're an innocent caught up as collateral, just open a ticket like he said.
-
(Quote) Respectfully, I disagree; what @VirMach is doing is good, for his company and for his customers who are able to play by the rules. I imagine 98% of those caught up in this cleanup knew from the start they were breaking the rules and living …

Yeah, if NAT is workable that's definitely an excellent path to cheap server nirvana! (I'm sure I had something with ramnode, but I've no idea what... hmm)

(Quote) I've only been using them for a few months - needed a cheap Wireguard server while I was on the road and I have to say, I'm impressed so far. Been rock solid (so much so I snapped and picked up a deal in their birthday thing in The Other Pla…

(Quote) Well the OP is entirely devoid of any other information, and didn't mention that credit cards weren't possible so... there's limits to how much mind reading I can do :-)

(Quote) Umm... https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/budget-kvm-sale are $15 annually, which is (unless my maths has gone badly wrong) under $2 a month. https://billing.virmach.com/cart.php?a=add&pid=206 is $1.50 a month, which is ... definit…

A lot of the big cloud operators - Google, MS, AWS, Oracle - have 'free forever' tiers if you're just looking for a box to play with. For paid options, folks like GreenCloud and Virmach just about fit the budget (although you may have to pay annual…

(Quote) You and I have different ideas about georedundancy; I like servers to be on different tectonic plates at least, if not different continents :-)

Had a nasty moment when my VPS dropped off, but it looks like the old IP addresses have finally nulled and I needed to hit the "fix network" button again to reconfigure the old addresses out of the way. Just in case anyone else wakes up to…

(Quote) Ahh, I saw popen in the callstack and naively assumed that Python would just call the actual OS popen instead of doing something weird :-)

subprocess.run will just spawn a shell for that command, skimming the manual. TL;DR is that if you can run on your command line, subprocess should pick it up. If it's not in your path for some reason, you should be able to specify the full pathname …

That's not very cryptic; it's telling you it can't find the 'setquota' command you're asking it to run.

(Quote) I'm on CHIZ001, but I have no idea which Chicago that is (although traceroute would suggest QN so hopefully yay!) (Side note against all the tales of woe; aside from a brief outage caused by an unexpected IP change a few months ago, this VP…
-
(Quote) That's good news; is Chicago on the "small chance of delay" list, or should I start obsessively hitting F5 on the network status page? :-)

Some odd routing there; from your VPS it bounces around cogent before getting down to dedipath's DAL border, but from your home connection it goes into their NYJ border and then gets lost. Might be something up with their routing?
