Migadu email host drops free plan, introduces micro plan, changes pricing

I just got this in email. I don't blame them as their free plan wasn't sustainable:

Hello,

Thank you for using Migadu and supporting independent email!

We have very important announcements which we would like to bring to
your attention today:

  • Storage limits on plans

  • New pricing (valid as of October 1st, 2020)

  • Sunsetting of the free plan (as of October 1st, 2020)

In April, amidst the virus turmoil, we released a noticeable update to
our system. We had rebuilt the infrastructure, invested into redundancy
and stability which we hope you could have witnessed yourself so far. We
have also made a few new hires (A yodeling Hileleihu! from them). This
was all made possible thanks to you.

We couldn’t be more grateful for all of the support and feedback we’ve
received from you in the past. Thank you again from the whole team at
Migadu.com!

Storage Limits

To ensure reliable email services and fair usage we are introducing soft
storage caps on plans.

The good news - we analyzed usage of existing accounts and almost no
account will need take action. Only a few will be required to upgrade
their subscription plan due to excessive usage.

Price Change

To ensure we continue providing you with the service quality you came to
expect from us, we are raising our prices. We hope this change will be
met with your approval.

The following will be effective as of 1st of October 2020:

  • The Mini plan becomes $9/monthly or $90/yearly
  • The Standard plan becomes $29/monthly or $290/yearly
  • The Maxi plan becomes $99/monthly or $990/yearly
  • New Micro plan is introduced for $19/yearly

For those that used the Mini plan very scarcely, the introduction of the
Micro plan will be good news. All existing yearly plans as well yearly
plan concluded during September will be honored to their end. If
present, any existing reductions on the accounts remain valid.

We plan to continue investing in further development of Migadu as well
contributions to the whole email ecosystem. Our short to mid-term plans:

  • excel in service reliability and feature maturity

  • offer scheduled, downloadable/uploadable backups

  • open new regions so you can choose where to store your data for each
    domain individually

  • contribute to and support open source projects we rely on, such as
    Rspamd ( https://rspamd.com )

  • further development of the new open source webmail Alps (
https://git.sr.ht/~emersion/alps ) which we are developing in
collaboration with the guys behind SourceHut

  • development of a new open source CalDAV/CardDAV server

  • development of new open source desktop and mobile email clients.

Sunsetting The Free Plan

We have offered years of free usage to hundreds of thousands of
mailboxes worldwide. We have spent significant time debating the issue,=2=20
but we sadly have decided to phase out the free plan. The number of free
accounts has skyrocketed past year and we find it no longer feasible to
offer it free of charge.

We are however introducing the Micro plan, a $19 yearly-only plan,
(that's only ~$1.6/month for unlimited addresses). The Micro plan is
limited to a single domain, but it doubles the existing limits of the
free plan with the exception of storage, which gets upped to 5 Gigabytes
(from 1 GB currently).

We would be very grateful if you could start supporting us now by
switching to the Micro plan.

The free plan is already not available anymore for newly registered
accounts. Existing users on the free plan are required to either upgrade
or migrate away before October 1st 2020. After that date, accounts will=2=20
become suspended and an upgrade will be required to access the data.

Thank you for your trust past years. We look forward to continuing to
serve you and your users in the years to come!

Happy mailing,

Dejan & Michael

    Nice, a blue-colored website, redesigned, but I like purple/violet color :p

  • A shame they had to kill the free plan, but understandable. Thankfully that micro plan is pretty affordable, all things considered.

Cheap dedis are my drug, and I'm too far gone to turn back.

  • The micro plan is limited to one domain which is annoying. I hope @jarland 's MXRoute is sustainable. It is much less expensive than the new Migadu multi-domain plans. I haven't used it much but have some idle domains on it and it's worked fine for the occasional confirmation message and the like.

You know I like transparency (this is revenue with numbers cropped out). I’ve recently become employed by MXroute, and we have a funding buffer for any unforeseen circumstances. Expect to see products pumping out, as it’s only become more sustainable over time.

Hate radiates from the source. If you look around and see it everywhere, it's coming from you.

Migado seems nice in many ways. I never tried them though, as I discovered and signed up with MXroute back when I first considered Migado, and I have been satisfied with MXroute ever since ...

I am wondering a bit about Migado's limits, for the Micro plan, a sending limit of 20 emails per day? That's not enough to cover one regular personal account ...
Or did I read that wrong? :)

Iirc the old $4 plan had 200/day limit. So pretty sure that 20 isn't a typo :P

I think there is a bit of a confusion there, as their website states up to 5 domains for the Micro plan.

  • I can't understand how anyone can live with a limit of 200 in / 20 out per day ... Even if I had just one email account, it would be too limiting ... :p

  • Wait until they launch a chat service with a limit of 20/hr ?

Indeed, and they say that 5 domains is a soft limit:

What is the soft limit on the Micro plan?

There is no enforced restriction of domains on the Micro plan. No one will care if you have 10, as long as the limit is not pushed too hard. This limit is in place to prevent abuse, rather than annoy users.

    (From https://www.migadu.com/pricing/#what-is-the-soft-limit-on-the-micro-plan )

Yeah, 20 out/day does seem pretty limiting for anyone who actually uses their email account for interacting with others. I guess that they want to make the Micro plan unattractive for anything but a "passive" account to receive mail at.

"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)

  • Interesting. The email had said "the Micro plan is limited to a single domain". 5 or 10 soft limit is much better. But 20/day outgoing is ridiculously low for an active mailbox.

Exactly, with this limit it’s totally unusable. And I’m not sure I understand the logic behind limiting incoming mails.

  • Well, Migadu's limits are what made me keep on searching until I discovered MXroute, and I never were close to hitting any limits there =)

  • Free emails hosting are slowly dwindling, luckily I'm locked mxroute cyber2017.

    Action and Reaction in history

  • It is indeed unfortunate that the limits are so low for their micro account. Also it doesn’t seem to support forwarding?

I do quite appreciate their detailed privacy policy.

It don’t be like it is until it do.
