TEXAS server from MetalVPS.com!! Shell, LXC, or KVM!!

Server: HP BL460c G6

CPU: 2 x Xeon L5630 4-Core = 8 cores = 16 threads

RAM: 48 GB DDR3 ECC

Hard drive: 2 x 400GB SAS SSD, Hardware RAID 1

IP Addresses: IPv4/29, IPv6/64

Connection: 1 GBit/s port

Bandwidth: 10 TB

Datacenter: Colocated with Level One Servers inside Carrier-1, Dallas, Texas, USA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Node OS: Slackware-current 🀩

VM OS: Whatever you want!

What you get

ssh to shell account or VNC to GUI (KDE, Xfce, more). You can spin up an LXC container or a KVM. Reasonable access to all resources. No arbitrary limits.

Reasonable access without arbitrary limits means, for example, that a single neighbor could run more than one VPS, could use more than one IPv4 and IPv6, etc.

Currently there is one user plus @Not_Oles. 🀩 So far, nobody has been using significant server resources -- thus, almost everything remains available.

Warnings!

  • Cluelessβ„’ administrator! πŸ˜€

  • Hey! It's Slackware-current! 🀩

  • KVM and LXC are insufficiently tested on this machine. πŸ”œ Want to help test?

  • Sometimes trusted neighbors might get sudo. πŸ™ˆπŸ™‰πŸ™Š Did you know that sudo can be configured?

  • Delivery might take awhile! 😴

  • @Not_Oles frequently messes up new installs! 😱

  • You might have to do your VM install yourself if @Not_Oles is slacking. 😎

  • No warranty, to the extent permitted by applicable law. No service level agreement. Not for business use. Intended especially for computer learning and fun!

  • White Hat stuff only, please! No copyright violations, please.

  • @Not_Oles tries to keep the system updated. Frequent maintenance reboots are guaranteed! It's horrifying 😱 or amazing βœ¨πŸ’–βœ¨ how up-to-date Slackware-current is! @Not_Oles has been updating almost every day for months, first on a VM on the MetalVPS Hetzner node and now here in Texas. Upstream issues an update, and -- within a day or two -- that update scrolls past while slackpkg update is running.

  • Please make your own redundant, offsite backups! It's easy to download or sync or clone your backup to a safe place. Please also make sure that you actually can restore from your backups! Please think of your MetalVPS account as ephemeral!

    Is that an offer or are you joking? I assume joking. :)

    By the way, what does skorupion mean in English? I imagined it might mean scorpion, but Google Translate said it means "crust."

    Hey! Just curious about what you mean by "offer a price", just a little confused on that. Do you mean that we should offer a price for a certain chunk for a server? Could I offer, let's say, $10/month for an LXC container with 10GB RAM 4 vCores? Is that how it works?

    Thanked by (1)Not_Oles

    FroCDN Files - Anonymously upload up to 15GB per file for free with unlimited bandwidth. FroCDN Paste - Paste text to share with others, fork of Hastebin. Also completely free to use.

    Yeah, that's right. More or less. Approximately. :) Maybe one push-up per month per IPv4,6,9? :)

    The server is, like me, getting on in years. But it still works, though much slower than these days' Ryzen standouts. Maybe yet again kinda like me. :)

    The server is a fun place to play around with Slackware and with networking! Also, the guys who run the colo are super nice!

    Might reinstall one of these days soon. I want to add an /altroot partition.

    It's a great time for sure! :)

    Thanks and best wishes from the Sonoran Desert! 🏜️

    NUMA optimizations remain under evaluation. Nevertheless, pending completion of NUMA optimizations, I can offer units of 1 hardware CPU core/month plus 6 GB RAM/month for 1 push up per unit. Please bear in mind that there may be an increase when NUMA optimization is completed.

    You requested a quote for HDD. As you know, this server has SAS SSD drives. Would emulated HDD be satisfactory? If yes, I could offer units of 10GB/month emulated HDD for 1 push-up per unit. If your workflow could take direct advantage of the SAS SSD drives, then, being free of the emulation overhead, I could offer the same unit size for only 1/2 push-up per unit.

    @yoursunny If you ever want a free trial account, please feel free to send me an ed25519 public key. Same for you @ehab.

  • 8 hardware cores + 48 GB RAM => 8 push-ups
    800GB SSD => 40 push-ups
    1 IPv4 + 1 IPv6 => 2 push-ups

    50 push-ups / month for the whole server, good.
    Hopefully you have a deal with the DC to pay colocation bills in push-ups.
    Push-up is a universal currency, just like kiss currency.

    What if we took the energy generated from push ups to offset the power bill for the server's power consumption? Hmm...
