Why are there no Low End Providers in Ireland?

Just wondering if any of the providers on here have ever looked into providing services in Ireland. Seems the big providers like it with Google, AWS and Microsoft all have big DC's here. Is it the cost of colo hosting here or just no market for the services?

  • The same reason that we have no low end providers on Luna.

    Taxes bro

    No real reason to put small center there. Far away from US, EU and Asia...

    1. Ireland has poor peering, mostly to UK and USA (USA was added a couple of years ago);
    2. Ireland is in the corner of Europe, far from many popular destinations;
    3. Infrastructure for fiber optics is poor, therefore only a couple of major cities have gigabit connection;
    4. Laws about landscape and architecture looks are harsh, so building a huge datacenter structure is quite a problem in Ireland;
    5. An ecological datacenter would require wind turbines which scare the shit out of birds - law is very strict regarding environmental protection; while lots of solar panels need space, which is expensive, because price of land is very high (it's just an island after all).
    6. The cost of living in Ireland is extremely expensive, making it expensive for the company to pay the staff and bills, in the end reflecting to consumer which can't afford the hosting or collocation (for example: we like it when it's low-end).
    7. 80% of product of Ireland is agriculture (mostly farms), so datacenters industry with high-speed internet connection is not quite population's focus, because they are not interested in bunkers for data safety, or skyscrapers for business expansion. Besides, extremely large winds of Ireland would be problematic for tall structures (they mostly live in connected houses, because of the winds).

    Corporate taxes are somewhat beneficial in Ireland, which makes it attractive for the big players to put dc's and callcenters there.
    However, infrastructure and hosting is expensive, which makes it impossible for the lowend players who are to small to really benefit from low taxes.

  • In England everyone is royalty and there is no low-end. The rest of Europe are peasants and their agriculture allowed them to have cheap VPSes on their vast data-farms.

    I am still curious how much water is in a molecule of water, so that I may know how much data can be encrypted and tightly held within a cabbage. This could become a booming business, not just in Ireland.

    basically this. most data centers reduce cost based on economies of scale. The population is just too low for that to work.
    we do not even have an amazon warehouse here, most of us have to order from amazon(uk or de)
