European "GitHub-like initative" to foster Open Source Projects from EU institutions:code.europe.eu

It seems like this "Github initative" got published almost silently.

https://code.europa.eu/info/about/-/tree/master

This appears to be a European initative to foster open-source projects developed and shared throughout Europe. Seems like a nice idea in the a good direction, albeit right now only European Institutions seem to be able to create projects for now. If first thought it's meant to be a GitHub alternative, but now it seems more like it aims at encouraging Open Source projects from EU Institutions and collaboration among european developers.

  • Looks more like the storage site for their "public funding => public code" plan. So unlikely to ever get opened I think

    Promising nonetheless

“ On code.europa.eu, projects can only be created by software development project teams working for European Union Institutions”

So… people working for EU institutions can create projects in personal capacity?
(Answer is evident but still a loophole).

EUPL license. Another one to add to the list on gihub/selfhosted

Not mocking the idea but appears not very well thought out and needs to evolve

Site hosted on a company owned by a firm with very well connected folks. 👍

I also wanted to commend their initative, but I feel like it hasn't been thought out that well and restricting access to EU institution members
is kinda..not what I was hoping to see.

Yeah, edited OP. I got carried away at first, thinking EU had really attempted to break the chains and offer a GitHub alternative (hosted Gitlab) open to anyone. Still, it could be promising and is a step in the right direction.

The EU bureaucrats are either stupid or evil.
And I doubt those people are stupid.

I don't think it's stupid. I think it's about wanting to ensure the EU continues to have access to the open source projects that come out of EU funded initiatives. If all of that just ends up on github, the EU is then relying on a non-EU private company to ensure they can continue to access the things they have funded. It makes sense to have a central EU repository for these projects, even if they are also mirrored on github.

Even if you believe github won't disappear, consider what happens if something files a false copyright complaint against one of these projects, or github decides to close down inactive accounts, or any of a myriad of things that could happen.

I didn't mean to say it's stupid, if it came over that way. Just that I would have loved for it to be more open, so anyone can create projects on there.

There was that chat about a european cloud a while back, but frankly not holding my breath on that either.

I'm just glad they're doing the open public code thing. Seems like a good precedent to set globally

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Given that Internet still is "Neuland" in Germany, this seems like a step in the right direction for Europe.
