Oh yeah, I remember Ben's video on his crappy VGA videocard. There was someone else who went to incredible lengths to build and rebuild things and outright designing others on a similar at-ttl-level for the heck of it, can't remember who now.
My pronouns are asshole/asshole/asshole. I will give you the same courtesy.
I dont get it. Why you think that much when you whiching a hardware porn.
People watch porn because they will never have a chance to do the same thing in real life.

It's not just porn, understanding hardware helps a lot.
Despite of what business folk say, every engineer is keenly aware of the cost of things.
Think about it, if you had infinite resourses, there wouldn't be a point in engineering, you could just throw infinite resources at the problem and be done with it. Hence, do more with less is one of the staples of engineering. In order to do with less you need to understand "the lower layer".
Computers today are perceptionaly slower then 15 years ago, despite being many times more powerfull, exactly because they are layers on top of layers on top of layers.
You want your computer to be snappier? You do not have to buy more powerfull GPU, you can start by throwing away compositor from your graphic stack.
