Torrents - seeding *nix content

More of a generic request/query for all providers.

I've seen some providers say no torrents and some say no illegal torrents.

Could I ask that providers include a clause allowing for legal torrents to facilitate seeding linux torrents?

Would be nice to have those hard idling boxes do something useful ;)

Bit of a stretch I know since one can't see whether it's legal or not from outside the box, but thought I'd ask

The answer will still likely be 'no' since it still abuses the hell out of the disk subsystem. Many VPS providers won't be happy if you do so.

From a providers perspective, it will kill disk iops.

    Upto the provider. But yes.

  • Pity. Oh well - was worth a try

    Thanks all

  • Honestly you are better off setting up a mirror of the distro via HTTP/FTP/Rsync etc. Some distros even have a single script you run on a factory fresh box to set it all up and automatically publish your mirror to their list, keep yours updated, etc.

    Here's Debian's, for example: https://www.debian.org/mirror/ftpmirror

You also can mirror other open source projects; I personally mirror the SNES9x emulation project on my boxes.

Cheap dedis are my drug, and I'm too far gone to turn back.

Would anyone use that though? I'm personally a little wary of mirrors hosted by randoms. torrents don't have that issue

That's why they have the signature files; if the packages or installer data is modified in some way it won't match the signed key and the package manager should refuse to install it.
