(Quote) Given that this is going to be RAID5 spinning rust and that my IOPS aren't going to be spectacular as a result, I (personally) would prefer to have a unmetered in/out port, perhaps throttled to 50 or 100Mbps instead. Other than that looks li…

I have a old Dell Inspiron laptop I used to run as a home server. One of the RAM slots was bad so you were capped to 256MB of RAM, with a Core 2 Solo CPU (no 64-bit support!), the NIC maxed out at 100Mbps, and I stuffed a 80GB 5400RPM HDD with a han…

A darn shame really. Looks like they had good intentions but COVID happened which made everything fall apart. Really sad as HM-Michael seemed like a very nice guy and the services they provided looked affordable yet sustainable. They get major kudos…

When I am using my Macbook, I just use the included SSH client, plus brew with mosh if needed if I'm on a bad internet connection. For file transfers I just rsync (again with brew), or if I'm feeling lazy, Filezilla SFTP.

Ouch. Better check the careers page for ReadyDedis...

I have had good experiences with the HP Microservers personally, but I think all off those systems are great options. Ultimately if you want the most flexibility I'd go with either the HP or Supermicro system.

I signed up for an account mostly out of curiosity but if I can get more free monitors... well I might let Uptime Robot go for good!

Is the specific datacenter the crucial thing, or would a nearby location be acceptable?

Thanks for the update. Hope you and your team are safe. Appreciate you are trying to keep support channels as open as possible.

Yeah any provider worth their salt will have INAP as one of their handful of "premium" peers. Alongside HE, L3 and the like... Still a bit spooky to see that sort of thing happen but at the same time glad they are taking it seriously and p…

What's the location for the host nodes, and at what datacenter are they located at?

You will have to claim you have a home business and then sign up for a costly business ISP line which allows for blocks of IPs to be assigned to your connection (at least here in the US with most ISPs). If you are doing this just for your own learn…

(Quote) That's why they have the signature files; if the packages or installer data is modified in some way it won't match the signed key and the package manager should refuse to install it.

(Quote) Yes, be afraid. Be very afraid and welcome your new red team overlords.

Honestly you are better off setting up a mirror of the distro via HTTP/FTP/Rsync etc. Some distros even have a single script you run on a factory fresh box to set it all up and automatically publish your mirror to their list, keep yours updated, etc…

Wow, Unmetered 1Gbps? Would it even be possible to have those speeds for sustained periods given the host node uplink (2x1Gbps)?

Followed - my handle is the same as here. Thank you for the generous offer!!

I fully agree that terms for network should be made more clear so we don't have to go hunting for them. It's in the providers and consumers best interest, as the provider lays the ground rules and then your support staff won't get tickets about &quo…

I would install smartmontools and check the SMART data on it, if they have it enabled in the BIOS. Should be able to check lifetime writes or lifetime remaining. Those speeds seem quite low.

Here's what I get at work. Located in Issaquah, WA. I've had a random issue in the past where once out of every say 30-40 clicks one of them will sit and load infinitely, but if I click again it works. I doubt it is anything on the forum's end. We'l…
