Don't understand why anyone would want to run Ubuntu server; 'tis beyond me.
I think Ubuntu is great for desktops but I prefer Debian for servers.
I tried both Debian and Ubuntu, and I just liked Ubuntu better with no particular reason. Maybe I'm just more familiar with it. And i also like canonical-livepatch since it's free
@AlwaysSkint@poisson
I am currently using Debian on my Proxmox host server. Using Centos for webhost server, ubuntu server for the dev and test VPS. @cybertech I also use Centos on my main servers that I use for websites.
@AnthonySmith could you share a little more details on the current server specs for both "talk" with vainilla and "forum" with fluxbb.
Like Distro version, and maybe some tips on how you manage to keep vainilla under those small specs?

The fluxbb (old LES support forum) runs on:
1 x 64mb NAT OpenVZ container running debian 8 - this is running lighttpd only
1 x 128mb NAT OpenVZ container running debian 8 - this is running mysql only
This forum (vanilla)
Specs in the original post, running on Ubuntu 18 LTS, I used one of my own made ubuntu templates which is cut down to almost nothing, so it ONLY runs what is required for this forum.
It is surprising what you can achieve with very little, that is the original LowEndSpirit which is something I wanted to recapture as it got lost over the years.

Why not go with a dedicated server? Those are very cheap now a days and it would avoid the downtime during switchover.
It runs on my own infrastructure so I just update the ram and disk specs in the backed as required, I can probably do that and resize the partition faster than a dedi can even reboot

Why not host it on a distributed network? Wait, then it wont be LowEnd anymore!
You mean on a cluster that slowly degrades over time like the original LET?
You know the truth of that dont you?
The cluster was actually fine, the issue was that for 3 years or so no one noticed that once of the disks was at 100% which is why sometimes when you updated your avatar it worked and sometimes it did not, depending on which server you hit haha.

So go with a LowEnd dedicated server. Maybe a RaspberryPi 3 B+ or 4?

Anyway.... Real nice thing and idea to share.
You still got too much RAM. Ask your DC to remove a stick or two.

Fluxbb is a LES server in Italy.
That is lowend.

You should host LES elsewhere because if InceptionHosting is having an outage, where will we create the drama thread?
It doesn't go that way.

@AnthonySmith why not make a "live" server resource usage page? Have a look at Github Awesomeselfhosted or smth else

Ah ok, I make my own KVM templates, so I don't need to worry about that.

I agree, I was just feeling fruity when setting this up so stepped outside the box, I wanted bleeding edge (well compared to centOS anyway)

I have to say that it was very generous of Mr. Ant to donate a VPS to you.
He has always been a really nice guy!
I asked for an upgrade and he spat at me!
