  • Maybe it's commented previously, but how much mem does MariaDB use for this forum?
(For a real small dynamic site, on 256MB, should I use sqlite or something instead?)

  • Nice to see it growing!

that is hard to answer as it is not static nor do I chart it over time.

  • It uses Cloudflare as CDN, IIRC? (Maybe wrong thread, but is that mainly for distributing/lowering load/traffic on the VPS, or mainly for security/DDoS protection etc.?)

That's how I talk about my prostate issues with my urologist.

  • In the first thread post @AnthonySmith said: Single E3-1270v6 core

    • 512MB Ram
    • 5GB NVMe (I am sure that will need to increase soon)
    • NGINX + Apache2 Hybrid + php73 + MariaDB
    • Running This forum and a WP site (yet to go live)

When adding a WP site on the same VPS, you'll need to add more memory?
(I'm just wondering if I should try running a WP site on a 256 MB NAT, sounds to me like a bit too much. Not talking production site, though.) ;)

Why not? WP site will run quite fine on NAT 256MB box, even for production site.

I did a PoC with a wordpress installation back when LES NAT vps were only 64mb.
Iirc, ~3 plugins and very few pages/posts.
256mb should be good enough if you optimize it a bit.

  • You can run MARIA oh MARIA DB on 64/128MB, but that gets dangerous, a crash may be imminent.

    Oh, cool. :+1:
I do need to learn more about how to optimize, though (especially MariaDB and nginx, if that's in the mix).
(I see some sites recommends redis with WP, but I have no idea when/if that would be beneficial.)

I guess I should set a limit in the config file? :)

  • If you load test a WP without add ons the cpu bottlenecks first on a mediumish vps.

Once you add caching it starts depending on how dynamic the content is and whether users are logged in or not etc

Planning on starting a new blog about stuff like this shortly actually

  • @AnthonySmith can you add a metric to the site that shows you how many active viewers there are, kind of like how phpbb and other forums do? Or is it already lurking somewhere and I just don't see it...

    That is from google analytics.

  • With our local motorcycling forum, we forbade the upload of images - only using links to images stored elsewhere.

This solved all the storage problems and allowed it to keep running on a dirt cheap hosting account.

Ram was bumped up to 1GB about 10 days ago, I noticed things started to slow down during backups.

    Disk is still 5GB.

This one is an eye-opener! Makes one wonder how logical are the 1:1 CPU and RAM specifications that the providers offer or the customers want. Most of the people are not going to use CPU and RAM in 1:1 but still everyone (including myself) wants at least 1 vCore for 1 GB RAM.

  • edited January 2020

Umm, how does that 1:1 ratio works? You get a 8 GB Ram and 8 vCPU?
I didn't heard of anyone's requirement like that.
Oh, now I understand. Providers do offer their packages like that.

    Still prefer 1:2.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

That is my go to spec for mess around servers, no need to consider much and pretty much anything will just be fine without any effort.

But when I care I try to use as little ram as possible, it is just more fun :)

  • How's it going? :)

I've been checking in on new signups from time to time just to do a count and take a pulse - some of these monikers seem HellaSpammy™ (though I've noticed just a few dumping any actual load so far)

another sign that this site has "arrived" I suppose ... I am wondering if any way to more easily sort out the Akshual Hyoomans - the grading as far as I can tell is:

    • confirmed email
    • visited a few times
    • maybe made a (non-spam) post or two

    What else?

Lurkers are good to have of course, the more the merrier!

I might be interested at some point to further analyze the delicate balance between shitposting memelords and very serious techfolk but more curious at this point as to the ratio of bots to humans really ...

    Anyway, tl;dr: over 900!
